The North Canton Police Department is a full-time professional law enforcement organization providing 24-hour service to the citizens of North Canton and is located in the lower level of City Hall at 145 North Main Street. Chief of Police Michael J. Grimes commands the Department with support from his Administrative Assistant and six Lieutenants. Five Lieutenants are assigned to the Uniformed Patrol Division and one to the Detective Bureau. The Uniformed Patrol Division is comprised of eighteen full-time Patrol Officers and three part-time Officers. The Department has maintained its current full-time uniformed staffing level of twenty-five officers since 1996 as duties and workload have increased to keep pace with the expanded City boundaries and the population growth. There is currently one full-time Officer assigned to the DARE program and one assigned to the Detective Bureau. Additional Patrol Officers are assigned to the Detective bureau temporarily as needed. In addition to their normal patrol duties several officers are assigned to special units within the Department. These include the School Resource Officer, Special Response Team members, Bike Patrol Officers, Property Officers, Department Specialized Training Officers and Field Training Officers. The Department operates a 24-hour Dispatch Center comprised of a Chief Dispatcher, six full-time Dispatchers, and up to three part-time Dispatchers. In addition to the Police Department the Center also handles dispatch responsibilities for the North Canton Fire Department, and North Canton Emergency Medical Service. The Department is also responsible for providing Crossing Guards at 8 various intersections around the City to ensure the safety of school children. The North Canton Police Department serves a population of 16,369 city residents located within six square miles and patrols approximately 81 miles of streets. The daytime population is approximately 18,080. Courteous officers maintain high visibility to enforce traffic laws and deter crime. Our goal is to continue to make North Canton a safe place to live, learn, work and play. The City of North Canton Civil Service Commission provides for the procedures on appointments, promotions, transfers, and dismissals for full-time officers and dispatchers. |
