D.A.R.E. HISTORY

The D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program came to the North Canton City Police Department and Schools in 1992. Initially the program's core curriculum was presented to both fifth and sixth grade students. Since the 1993 - 1994 school year the core curriculum is taught in the fifth grade. The program is presented in the four public elementary schools, one parochial school and one Montessori school. Since the 1992 - 1993 school year there have been approximately 3900 students go through the core program. A personal safety and seat belt safety program is also taught in 1st and 3rd grades.

In the summer of 1999 the G.R.E.A.T. Summer Camp was added to the D.A.R.E. program. The G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education And Training) program is a positive alternative program for students in grades 4 thru 8. The program consists of two three-week sessions that are held Monday thru Friday for six hours a day. The program gives the students additional information to further the D.A.R.E. program's effectiveness.

Ptl. Michael Foltz is the G.R.E.A.T. and D.A.R.E. officer for the Department.

NORTH CANTON EAGLES PROVIDE D.A.R.E. WATCHES

D.A.R.E. watches provided by the North Canton Eagles were a big hit at the recent first semester D.A.R.E. graduation ceremonies. Every graduating student received a red and black D.A.R.E. logo watch donated by the Eagles. All graduating students in the second semester D.A.R.E. graduations will also be provided a watch by the Eagles. There will be approximately 400 graduating D.A.R.E. students this school year. The North Canton Police Department appreciates the boys and girls watches donated by the Eagles. (posted 1/29/08)
